Das unterirdische Höhlensystem namens Abyss ist der letzte weitgehend unerforschte Ort auf dieser Welt. Niemand weiß wie tief der gigantische Abgrund reicht, der von wundersamen Kreaturen bewohnt wird und wo sich unzählbare mysteriöse Relikte befinden. In der Stadt Ôzu am Rande des Abgrunds, lebt das kleine Mädchen Riko. Sie träumt seit jeher davon in die Fußstapfen ihrer Mutter zu treten und als Höhlentaucherin die Geheimnisse des Höhlensystems zu erforschen. Eines Tages trifft sie bei einer Expedition in der obersten Tiefenschicht des Abyss auf einen kleinen Jungen mit mechanischen Armen, der ihr das Leben rettet und sich als Roboter herausstellt. Zusammen begeben sie sich fortan auf eine abenteuerliche Reise, um den sagenumwobenen Mysterien des Höhlensystems auf den Grund zu gehen…
